(As usual) with most Apple products the Magic Trackpad did the job fine – but the configuration options are limited with Apple’s OS X driver. I bought JiTouch which offers a lot more options including additional character recognition gestures.
Here what I changed from the excellent defaults:
Characters/All Applications
Up New Tab
Down Close / Close Tab (works in all apps)
Left Shift-Command [ (go to previous directory/tab)
Right Shift-Command ] (go to next directory/tab)
Characters/Safari
/ Up Option-Command F (go to safari’s search box)
I left the Tackpad gesture default
