Odd Thomas (USA 2013)

In a California desert town, a short-order cook with clairvoyant abilities encounters a mysterious man with a link to dark, threatening forces.

I am not entirely sure why this movie is getting such scathing reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Maybe I liked the movie a lot more because I watched it not knowing anything about it. Not who the director was (Stephen Summers) nor what the movie was about. It started out nicely paced with some interesting slow motion shots. It got to the point right away. Action and funny and a bit creepy. I would give it a 4 out of 5.

Chiko (Germany 2009)

Loyalty between two friends is stretched to its limit by one’s deception.

Yes, well, that’s not exactly catching the gist of this movie. The violence is gritty, probably too much for some. The acting is good – I particularly liked Dennis Moschitto and Volkan Özcan. Moritz Bleibtreu, who seems to be in every second german movie, is also in this one. Probably to secure the financing of the movie? But he plays well, even though I don’t believe him to be a bad guy as easily. I would recommend the movie.
