Don’t bother: Black Sheep (NZ 2007)

Picture 1.jpg

I have no idea how this movie was rated so highly on RT 71% and IMDb 6.1. It’s not like I didn’t want to watch it until the end, but it was close. I lost pretty much all interest after the first 20 minutes and just continued watching to see what kind of gore effects they could come up with. It’s really a one-gag movie. And it might work for people who have seen sheeps in the last 12 months – for all other people, pass it on… not worth the time.

Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman (UK 2006)

The Last Hangman.jpg

Synopsis (possible Spoiler): The life and times of Albert Pierrepoint – Britain’s most prolific hangman

Interesting movie about a subject you usually don’t hear much about these days. Strong performance by Timothy Spall . The movie is on the slow side, but I did enjoy a great deal out of it. The relationship Pierrepoint had with his victims is gripping.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (USA 2007)

Picture 3.jpg

Synopsis (possible Spoiler): Diehard video game fans compete to break World Records on classic arcade games.

Even though I was never a Donkey Kong fan, nor a very good player (I loved my Phoenix, thank you very much), this documentary was great. It transported me back into the days when playing video games meant to leave the house. And, how it was all about the technique, timing and reflexes. Even if you are not a old-school video gamer, this will still appeal to ‘normal’ people as well.

Teeth (USA 2007)

Synopsis (possible Spoiler): Still a stranger to her own body, a high school student discovers she has a physical advantage when she becomes the object of male violence. |

This one was a lot of fun! I didn’t expect much. Basically a glorified B-movie. Well, that’s what it is, really. But I liked the acting, as over-the top it was in some scenes. A nice surprise to see John Hansley in anything other than Nip/Tuck. After being almost done with assimilation into the American way of thinking about Sex (instead of teaching our youngster on how to have safe sex, we teach them how to not have any sex at all, yeah, right) the movie was even more effective. In Europe it would probably be seen as a fairytale. It has some gory scenes, and, for me, strikes a good balance between being funny and disturbing.

Fido (USA 2006)

Synopsis (possible spoiler): Welcome to Willard, a small town lost in the idyllic world of the 50’s, where the sun shines every day, everybody knows their neighbor, and rotting zombies carry the mail.

I had a lot of fun with this movie. It does fall a bit in the second half, but the first half should keep you going to the end, and still enjoy it.
